Adverts for digipaks

Adverts for digipaks are to make the public aware something new will be released soon such as a new album. These get rated by critics and reviews are made and published for the audience.

This digipak is advertising a new single by Anthony Rankin called 'Quicksand'. What makes this digipak so good is the theme of it seems to have something to do with his life. This could be told by the image in the background of what could be him and his girlfriend and the candle and leaves around the table. This could be stating some sort of death or brake up in a relationship.
The candle lights up the page and makes the petals stand out around the page, this can make the audience feel a sense of romance within the advert with the love heart around the candle.
I think that the font is very simple and plain, it is easy to see and read but not very attractive to the audiences eyes.
The Logo of HMV down in the left hand corner can make the audience aware of where to purchase the album from. Also next to the logo are some website address and a Facebook page, this appeals to the audience who are online and can access online information.
All in all i find the advert not very appealing to the audience it could appeal to the single women of the country if the album relates to romantic songs which single women could relate back to.

This digipak is advertsing a new album by this artist. This digipak stands out for me because it is very dark and looks like a very depressed artist. This can show that the album is a very dark and depressing album which could have meaning full lyrics that the audience can relate back to.
The text on the digipak is very hard to read and understand. By the text being hard to read it makes the girl in the middle stand out even more and makes her the centre of attention in the digipak. This shows good identity on the lead signer and will make the audience aware of who she is. At the top of the advert it shows a rating from some company by having this it will make the audience feel that the album is interesting and appealing and by having the stars it will make the audience wont to purchase the product. Again having the websites below attract a wider audience who can go online and view the product online and get more information and a bigger insight into the album.

Analysis of two digipack.

A digipack is something artist and record companies put together to go with an album coming out. This the CD something extra for the audience. some include posters for the audience to keep.

Here we can see a digipack showing the artist Rihanna. This is advertising her new album she launch named LOUD. As the audience can see it show her being elegant and sexy with voyeuristic images which make the audience stare and glance at her.
There are alot of bright and vibrant colours which makes it eye catching. The bright colors represent Rihanna as a bold and confident signer and his could follow on to show within her music. The can make the audience wont to go and buy the album because the bright colors make the audience feel that there is so much more to see and hear.
By having Rihanna laid out naked across the digipak it can state that she shouting I'm free and sexy and she wont's to make other women feel like this and admire her.

The second digipack is showing Katy Perry advertising her album 'Teenage dreams'. The digipak shows Katy Perry standing confidently and look out of the digipak into the audiences eyes. By having the plain background behind her makes her look bold and confident .
Having the CD disc in bright and vibrant colors makes the CD stand out to the audience and give a mysterious effect with the red and white swirly lines.
From looking at the digipak the audience can not see the name of the artist or the name of the album, this suggest that the record label consider her to be so famous and has her own brand identity.

A list of conventions for music videos.

Conventions are something you would always see or someting you would always expect to see within music videos for example

For pop you would expect to see some birght coulors and dance routines with casual clothes or something with women you would excpect to see short dresses with alot of there body hanging out. The music video would be based around the signer doing some sort of performance or telling a story. Within pop music videos the audience would expect to see voyeuristic images for men to stare at women whilst they perform.

With rock you would expect to see alot of the band and their equipment and playing around a crowd or a practice area.. Also with rock videos you also expect to see live performances whilst they play. This is an easy way of creating a music video. With rock videos the video always focuses on the lead signer. For rock music the audience have come to expect to see alot of lip synching from the performer/s. A good example of this would be Underdog by You Me At Six.

Intertextuality in music videos.

Intertextuality is using someones elses work and making it your own by putting your own twist into it. Also it is where a music video shows parts from a film which the song appered in. Going with all that anything that represents something from something else counts as intertextuality.

An example of this would be 'Jai Ho' by Pussycat dolls. This is because at the end of the song the do a dance from the movie Slumdog millionairre and also shows clips from the atcually movie.

This is a good example of intertextuality becuase it is chorographed in the same way and also the mise en scene looks similar. The song also relates back to the film by using the same culture. The Pussycat Dolls use a different location but use the same theme within the music video.
(Pussycat Dolls, 'Jai Ho')

Another type of intertextaulity would be from the movie Charlie and the Chocolate factory and Katy Perry's Carlifornia girls. This would be becuase in her video she has made it seem as some sort of fantasty land where it is full of candy and you can it the candy.

These two photos from parts of the movie and the music video. This is showing intertextuality becuase Katy Perry is using the idea of a fantasy land from Charlie and the chocolate factory but put her own twist on it to make it look more femine and more about her and the styles she like.

Categories of music videos.

Performance Based Video:
Performance based videos usually show the band or artist performing throughout the video. This type of category is the best to use when the budget is tight. When doing this type of category the location is important because it has to go alone with the song.

The type of genre that this could fall into could be rock and also Hip hop this would be becuase there are alot of videos which follow bands and artist and show them performing.

An example of a performance based video would be Kings of leon - Use somebody. In this music video its all about the band and they show them playing at gigs and also following them round so it gives the audience a sense of what there life is like.

Narrative Based Video
A narrative based video is a type of music video that tries and tells the audience a story. This would usually involved the artist or band performing at some point in the video. Something that is seen alot with a narrative based video is scenes from a movie that the song has appeared in aswell.

The genre this would usally fall into would be pop and rap and also rock. This would be because alot of artist try and tell stories and show a story in there music video.

An example of this would be 'i dont want to miss a thing' by Aerosmith. This would be becuase the song appears in the movie armageddon produced in 1998 starring Bruce willis. in the music video to i dont want to miss a thing, it relates back to the movie and also shows clips from the film.

Concept based videos

Concept based videos are a video that is based on one idea. This is a category that is not used as much because the audience of music videos demand more. Also with this the video would tend to have been edited alot which would be noticed by the audience. The genre this would usally fall into would be pop song this is becuase it is easy to focus on one subject and do editing to make the video look better.

An example of this would be Ellie Goulding Starry eyed. This would be because the whole concept of the video is this magical land with her and her dancers. Alot of editing work had been put in and makes the video really unusually but at the same time successful

Laura Mulvey's theory.

Laura Mulvey's 'Male Gaze' theory is all about seeing a women from a male perspective in music videos and films. Laura Mulvey talks about how we always see women as sexy and tall and how the camera pans up and down her slowly and slowly going over womens breast for men to stare. Laura Mulvey claims that within music videos and films that women are used as an object for the male eye. Saying that once the audience decode the video they will be able to see that women are being sexualised.

The three things that Laura Malvey claims you will see in music videos are. The first one is the perspective of the male this is the camera angles and the way she looks, the second one is perspective of the spectator this is what the audience are seeing, and the third one is both of them put together.

How we will encode this into our video is by giving shot of the female actress by panning up and down her body showing of her elegance throught the video. Also we will have longer shot on the female actor at one time. This will follow up Laura Mulvey's theory and can give the audience a chance to decode the video through Laura Mulvey's theory.

The clip on the left hand side is a shot from the start of the song 'call on me' by Eric Prydz. The song demonstrates Laura Mulvey's theory by panning up and down women whilst they work out in a sweat and tight costumes. It shows sex appeal which appeal to men who will stare and watch the music video over and over again.

Andrew Goodwins theory

The six points below are points from Andrew Goodwin's music video theories. These were sourced from http://www.scribd.com/doc/21443985/Andrew-Goodwin-and-Laura-Mulvey-Music-Video-Feature-Notes

There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography.
Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
Voyeurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screens, cameras, mirrors, etc.

There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.

A music video that uses and reflects on Andrew Goodwin's theory is Coldplay, Yellow. The whole music video is based around the lead signer walking on the beach in cold weather signing the song. By doing this the audience see a lot of close ups of the lead signer. This is promoting the band and makes the lead signer become more well known.

Appling Goodwins theory to our video:
Within our video will be follwing Andrew Goodwind theory by having close ups of the lead signer, by doing this it shows that we are shwoing we know what record companies want by following Andrew Goodwins theory. We will also be using voyeurism by having shots which come from the angle of mirros and objects where the camera can come out of. Using voyeurism is a good way to be different and creative with our video and can represent characters in many different ways so this means that the viedo can be decoded by the audience.

Questionnaires.

What type of music videos interested you?

Why does this type of music videos interest you?

What do you look for in music videos and why?

We are currently working on creating a music video for a rock/pop song. What advice would you give us?

What do you think makes a good rock/pop music video?

What do you think makes a bad rock/pop music video?

Name a successful rock/pop music video and state why that is successful.

Above shows an example of a questionnaire that we recived back with infromation about music videos with the same genre as the music video we are doing.

What we learned from the questionaires that we recived back was alot of the audience wont to see the band and the lead signer be the main attraction throughout the video, Research shows that in music videos with the same genre as ours this is common to see.
The questionaires also showd us that the audience would like to see special effects in the music video as this would bring the music video to life and give it something extra special that will attract the audience.

All in all from reciving the questionaires back it gave us as a group a bigger instight into what the audience wont and expect to see from the music video. With all the research that we have gathered it will help us plan the video to a better standard and include effects that attract the audience.
